COMPETITIONS

TORONTO, ONT., Ontario Parliament Building, Queen’s Park, 1880. Ewart was one of 16 architects who submitted plans in this important competition. His entry, signed “Nax” achieved the Third Premium (Globe [Toronto], 6 Dec. 1880, 8). The first prize was awarded to Gordon & Helliwell, but all the schemes were later rejected by the provincial government as being too costly. A second competition was later held in 1882, but again, the winning scheme was never built, and eventually, the commission was handed to the Buffalo, N.Y. architect Richard A. Waite who had earlier served as juror for the second competition.
